Historikk:

1936 Bygget som hvalbåt SOUTHERN BARRIER ved Bremer Vulkan, Vegesack, Tyskland for Southern Whaling & Sealing Co. Ltd, London, England.
NB: Det fantes også en tidligere hvalbåt med samme navn i nevnte selskap, bygget i 1929, men med uviss skjebne.
Fanget for kokeriet SOUTHERN PRINCESS sesongen 1936/40.
1940 Rekvirert i oktober av South African Seaward Defence Force. Omdøpt til HMSAS SOUTHERN BARRIER (T-28) og ble et av Syd-Afrikas berømte ”Little Ships”.
1941 Solgt i september sammen med de fleste av selskapets fangstflåte til Sevilla Whaling Co. Ltd (Chr. Salvesen & Co.), London. Beholdt navnet. Fremdeles under militær administrasjon. (Var aldri i fangst for Salvesen).
1945 Solgt i januar til Union Government of South Africa. Omdøpt til HMSAS STEENBERG (T-28), (minesveiper).
1946 Solgt i mai til A/S Kosmos (Anders Jahre A/S), Sandefjord. Omdøpt til KOS 29.
Navnet KOS 29 (XXIX) blir igjen benyttet. Den foregående ble beslaglagt av britiske marine og overlevert Royal Navy som minesveiper i november. Fikk navnet
HMS ULLSWATER i 1939. Den var bestilt av A/S Kosmos ved Smith’s Dock (b. 1074) og var den siste hvalbåt bestilt og bygget ved Smith’s Dock før krigen. Ble torpedert av tysk MTB utenfor Eddystone Lighthouse (UK) den 19/11-1942. Alle 26 ombord døde

1936 Built as whale catcher SOUTHERN BARRIER by Bremer Vulkan, Vegesack for Southern Whaling & Sealing Co. Ltd., London.
Note: There was also an earlier SOUTHERN BARRIER. Built 1929 but with unknown fate.
Catching for the factory ship SOUTHERN PRINCESS season of 1936/36.
1937 Catching for factory SOUTHERN EMPRESS season 1937/38.
1938 Catching for factory SOUTHERN EMPRESS season 1938/39.
1939 Catching for factory SOUTHERN EMPRESS season 1939/40
1940 Requisitioned by South African Seaward Defence Force in October. Renamed HMSAS SOUTHERN BARRIER (T-28) and became one South-Africa’s famous “Little Ships”.
1941 Sold to Chr. Salvesen & Co in September together with nearly the entire Southern Whaling & Sealing’s ex-whaling fleet. Still under navy command. War never a part of the Salvesen’s whaling fleet as whale hunter. Name unchanged.
1945 Sold to Union Government of South Africa in January. Renamed HMSAS STEENBERG (T-28) and used as a minesweeper.
1946 Sold to A/S Kosmos (Anders Jahre & Co.), Sandefjord in May, renamed KOS 29.
The name KOS 29 (XXIX) is used again. The previous one was seized by the British Admiralty and handed over to the Royal Navy as a minesweeper in November. Named HMS ULLSWATER in 1939. It was ordered by A/S Kosmos at Smith's Dock (b. 1074) and was the last whale catcher ordered and built at Smith's Dock before the war. Was torpedoed by German MTB outside Eddystone Lighthouse (UK) on 19/11-1942. All 26 on board died.
