Hvalbåt THORBRYN på museum i Tasmania

        Hvalbåt THORBRYN som var i rederiets eie fra den ble bygget i 1947 til 1962, blir nu plassert på et museum, dessverre ikke i Sandefjord, men i Tasmania.
         THORBRYN som nu heter CHEYNES II er blitt donert til Hobart Maritime Museum og blir for tiden pusset opp av medlemmer av museet, lokale sjømannsforeninger etc. Det rapporteres at maskineriet er i perfekt stand og gjør fremdeles mer enn 15 knots. Skipet er ett av de få gjenværende dampskip i virksomhet i Australia og museet håper fortsatt å kunne holde det  in working order . Det vil sikkert bli en museumsgjenstand av rang.
        Hvalbåt THORBRYN ble bygget ved Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. i 1947 og var i fangst frem til 1959. Den fanget 1363 hval og tilhørte forskjellige ekspedisjoner. Mange av våre pensjonerte hvalfangere vil sikkert huske THORBRYN, som en Smiths Docker var den en fortreffelig sjøbåt.

Australske radioamatører på ekspedisjon med tidligere hvalbåt THORBRYN

        En av våre tidligere telegrafister, Hallvard Gilbu, Sandefjord, har fått følgende brev fra en radioamatør på Norfolk Island, South Pacific:

Hallo Hallvard.
        Jeg har funnet kallesignalet ditt i Callbook'en 1981, og lurer på om du kan hjelpe. Som du kanskje vet planlegger H.I.DX.A. en ekspedisjon til Heard Island i det sydlige Indiske Hav med amatørradio og vitenskapelig mål.
        Skuta vi har kontrahert heter CHEYNES II og har interesse fordi den i sin tid het THORBRYN og var hjemmehørende i Sandefjord. Som du kan tenke deg er en ekspedisjon til Heard Island (selv om vi starter i Tasmania) svært dyr. H.LDX.A. er en ikke-profitterende assosiasjon og vi prøver alle avenyer for å få inn penger. Med THORBRYNs lange historie i hvalindustrien synes vi skuta har nyhetsverdi, og vi tror at en gruppe norske amatører hjemmehørende i Sandefjord kanskje kan hjelpe oss å få en del publisitet.
        Kunne dere tenke dere å møtes og diskutere om dere kan hjelpe H.I.DX.A. - kanskje ta kontakt med lokale aviser og gi dem historien om ekspedisjonen og nødvendigheten for finansiell støtte? Skuta har alle loggbøker fra Sørishavets dager ombord. Vi tror kanskje rederne eller noen av mannskapet enda husker henne. Vi har også hørt om en klubb i Sandefjord for eks-hvalskippere etc. Kanskje de kunne bli gjort kjent med saken.
        Ekspedisjonen vil bestå av 18 medlemmer hvorav 8-9 vil være radio-amatører. De andre medlemmene vil ha vitenskapelige interesser. Vi planlegger å dra fra Hobart 2. januar og håper å ankomme Heard Island ca. 14 dager senere. Et to ukers opphold på øya skulle gjøre oss ferdige med både amatør-radio og vitenskapelige oppdrag.
        Kunne dere som en gruppe prøve å hjelpe H.I.DX.A. etablere litt interesse i Sandefjord? Skuta blir nu gjort ferdig til reisen, og vi trenger hver smule finansiell støtte vi kan få. Prøv å koordinere en publisitets-kampanje i byen som har et spesielt forhold til skuta vår.
        Kirst, min XYL er fra NARVIK og skal være med på ferden til Heard Island. Hennes kallesignal blir VKONL.

The Whale catcher THORBRYN as museum ship in Tasmania

        The whale catcher THORBRYN as served in the company from her completion in 1947 to 1962, have became a museum ship, unfortunally not in Sandefjord, but in Hobart, Tasmania.
        THORBRYN with her new name CHEYNES II have been donated to the Hobart Maritime Museum and for the time being under maintenance by members of the museum and a local seaman assosiation. It's been reported that the machinery is in perfect shape and ship still doeing more than 15 knots. The ship is one of the few still excisting steam ship in Australia and the museum hope they can keep her in good working order . It's sure she will be an attraction of first degree for the museum.
        The catcher THORBRYN was built by Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. in 1947 and was operative until 1959. A catch of 1363 whales and she participated with several expeditions in the Thor Dahl system. Many of our retaired whalers will remember the THORBRYN. As a Smiths Docker, she was a suitable seagoing vessel.

Australian amateur radio operators on expedition with the former catcher THORBRYN

        One of our former wireless operators, Hallvard Gilbu, Sandefjord, has received following letter from a radio amateur on Norfolk Island, South Pacific:

Hello Hallvard.
        I found your call sign in the Callbook of 1981, and wonder if you can help us. As you may know the H.I.DX.A. are planning an expedition to Heard Island in the southerly Indian Sea with amatour radio and scientific purpose.
        The ship wa have rented carrying the name CHEYNES II and are of interest because it's former name was THORBRYN with home port Sandefjord. As you may understand, an expedition to Heard Island (even if we start in Tasmania) very expensive. H.LDX.A. is a non-profit assosiation and we try new ways of getting sponsor money. With the THORBRYNs long history in the whaling industry we felt that this had som news interest, and we believe that a group of norwegian amateurs living in Sandefjord may help us getting som publisity.
        If all of you could give it a thought and discuss if you can help the H.I.DX.A. – may have contact with the local newspaper and let them know about the expedition and necessary financial support? The vessel have all the logbooks from the time in Antactic on board. We believe the shipping company and some of the crew still remeber her. We also have heard about a club in Sandefjord for ex-whalers etc. May they can be notified about the case.
        The expedition will consist of 18 members whereoff 8-9 will be radio amateurs. The other members will have scientific interest. Ve plan to leave Hobart 2nd. of January and hope to arrive Heard Island abt. 14 days later. A two weeks stay will be sufficient to clear off both amateur radio and the scientific study.
        Could you as a group try to help H.I.DX.A. to establish a little interest in Sandefjord? The vessel will be prepared for the voyage, and we need some financial support. Please try to make a publisity campain in the town having special relation to our vessel.
