Extract from the deck log book of the S/S VEN-KOH
The 18/11-40.
At 11.24 o'clock arrived at Wakamatsu. No orders about loading.
The 9/5-41.
At 7.00 o'clock commenced to bunker. All the deck crew and the engine room crew had been given notice terminating their respective appointments. Signed off and gone to Shanghai. At the same time new deck and engine room crew came on board. 37 men in all. At 17.30 o'clock finished the bunkering.
The 10/5-41.
The captain been ashore for conference with Messrs. Miyachi & Co. Ltd, representative Mr. Konoshi, who stated that the s/s
VEN-KOH would today be seized by the Japanese Government. The captain demanded this in writing from the Authorities, but this was declined. The captain handed in a written protest to the Wakamatsu Police. Chief engineer J. A. Faerstad been with me ashore as witness that the protest was handed over to the Police and that they would not give anything in writing about the taking over. At 16.30 o'clock the Wakamatsu harbour Police came on board accompanied by Miyachi's representatives and stated that the Norwegian flag was to be taken down and that the Japanese flag was to be hoisted. At 16.37 o'clock the Norwegian flag was lowered in the presence of the Harbour Police and immediately afterwards the Japanese flag was hoisted. At the same time it was stated that the captain and the ship's officers were to leave the vessel on the following day at 15.00 o'clock. Japanese captain and officers arrived on board. Sent telegrams to the Nor­wegian Legation, Tokyo, and to Messrs. Aall & Co. Ltd, Kobe, as follows:- "SHIPS TAKING OVER BY JAPANESE GOVERNMENT TODAY AND WE ARE ORDERED TO LEAVE BY 3 P.M. TOMORROW. JOHANNESSEN. E1NARSEN."
