Jahre), Sandefjord. Sjøsatt 18/05, levert i juli.
Fanget for KOSMOS II-ekspedisjonen sesongen 1932/33 i
Sydishavet i et samarbeide med selskapene til Bruun & von der Lippe.
1933 Fanget sesongen 1933/36 for KOSMOS II med
Mauritz Marthinsen som skytter.
1936 Fanget sesongen 1936/37 for KOSMOS II med
Daniel Hansen som skytter
1938 Fanget sesongen 1938/39 for ULYSSES med Nils
Iversen som skytter

Seilte videre mot Trinidad 10/09 med ankomst 18/09. Gikk fra Trinidad
26/09 med ankomst Halifax 05/10.
1941 Seilte over til Storbritannia for ombygging til minesveiper
ved verkstedet Amos & Smith Ltd Engineers & Repairers, Hull, England.
Gikk fra Methil Roads, Scotland 29/04.
Kolliderte utenfor Hull 24/08 med den engelsk jageren HMS WOLSEY
i klarvær og under stor fart traff KOS XVI aktenfra og KOS XVI
sank natten til 25/06 av skadene hun var påført. Skipssjefen Lt. M.
Fredriksen og resten av mannskapet ble tatt i land i Grimsby, England.
Observert av dykkere 20,47 nautiske mil ØNØ av Withernsea, ikke langt
fra utløpet til elven Humber, på en dybde av 36 m. I oppreist stilling
og intakt! |

Built as whale catcher KOS XVI by Smith's Dock Co. Ld.,
Middlesbrough for Hvalfangerselskapet Kosmos II A/S (Anders Jahre & Co),
Sandefjord. Launched 18/05-1932 and delivery in July.
Used as catcher for the KOSMOS II-expedition.
For season of 1932/33 sent to the Southern Seas as a cooperation with
the companies of Bruun & von der Lippe (Antarctic and Pelagos).
1933 Season of 1933/34 as catcher for KOSMOS II with Mr
Mauritz Marthinsen as gunner.
1934 Season of 1934/35 as catcher for KOSMOS II with Mr
Mauritz Marthinsen as gunner
1935 Season of 1935/36 as catcher for KOSMOS II with Mr

1940 The season 1939/40 called off 08/03. Final result of the
catch for the expedition was 979 whales. Production was 58.480 barrels
whale oil and 2.520 barrels of sperm oil.
Arrived Walvis Bay after end of season on 19/03. Hired out to the
Norwegian Navy (KNM) in July for use as minesweeper with Norwegian crew.
Ordered for Halifax and called Pernambuco, Brazil 02/09. Continued 10/09
for Trinidad with arrival 18/09. Departed 26/09 and arrived Halifax on
05/10.
1941 Sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to UK for conversion to
minesweeper at the yard Amos & Smith Ltd Engineers & Repairers, Hull.
Left Methil Roads on 29/04 heading for Humber.
Collided outside Hull 24/08 with British destroyer. HMS WOLSEY in
clear weather and high speed hit the KOS XVI from behind and
KOS XVI went down. She sank the night of 25/06 of the damage she was
inflicted. Master was Lt. M. Fredriksen. Him and his crew was taken to
Grimsby.
Observed by divers 20,47 nautical miles ENE of Withernsea not far from
the outlet of River Humber at a depth of 36 m. In upright position and
intact! |
