27/08 syd av Island etter at den var skadet av bomber fra engelske fly.
U-570 ble overtatt av Royal Navy og satt i tjeneste som
HMS GRAPH.
I september var
WINDERMERE
med som eskorte i konvoi UR 40. Konvoier med betegnelsen UR hadde rute
mellom Loch Ewe, Scotland og Reykjavik ukentlig fra 1941 gjennom hele
krigen uten kansellering eller et eneste skip mistet - 169 konvoier som
fulgte 1060 handelsskip totalt.
1942
Fra november var
WINDEMERE
stasjonert i Reykjavik, Island og fra juli var
WINDERMER
en del av 10th Anti-Submarine Striking Force under kommando av sjefen
for Islands avsnittet med base i Reykjavik. Styrken bestod av seks anti
ubåt fartøy alle var av 1939 utgaven av hvalbåter fra Smith’s Dock.

1939
Built as a whale catcher KOS XXVII at Smith's Dock Co Ld, South
Bank-on-Tees at the expense of A/S Kosmos (A. Jahre & Co), Sandefjord.
Launched 05/07-1939 as KOS XXVII.
KOS XXVII
was the fourth in a series of five ordered on behalf of Anders Jahre at
Smith's Dock in 1939. She became
KOS 27
after the war, and that was the end of using Roman numerals on their
catchers. She was one of the two of five who returned to the company.
Requested by
British authorities after launch 26/08. Commissioned by the Royal Navy.
Named HMS WINDERMERE (FY 207). Classified by RN as MS Trawler
Lake Class.
1941 Participated in capturing German submarine U-570
27/08 south of Iceland after it was damaged by bombs from English
planes. In September, HMS WINDERMERE was an escort in convoy
UR 40. Convoys with the designation UR had a route between
Loch Ewe and Reykjavik weekly from 1941 throughout the war without
cancellation or a single ship lost - 169 convoys that followed 1.060
merchant ships in total.
1942 From November WINDEMERE was stationed in Reykjavik,
Iceland and from July HMS WINDERMERE was part of the 10th
Anti-Submarine Striking Force under the command of the commander of the
Icelandic section based in Reykjavik. The force consisted of six
anti-submarine vessels all of which were from the 1939 edition of whale
boats from Smith's Dock. The names were HMS BUTTERMERE (launched
as KOS XXV), ELLESMERE (launched as KOS XXIV),
THIRLMERE (launched as KOS XXVI), ULLSWATER (launched
as KOS XXIX), WASTWATER (ex. GRASMERE, launched as
KOS XXVIII) and WINDERMERE (launched as KOS XXVII),
later KOS 27.
1946 Sold to A/S Kosmos and Hvalfangerselskapet II A/S (Anders
Jahre & Co A/S), Sandefjord in June and named as KOS 27. Restored
as whale catcher at Nylands Verksted, Oslo. Catcher for KOSMOS IV
for the season 1946/47. The shooter was Harald B. Hansen.
1947 Catcher for KOSMOS IV for the 1946/47 season. The
shooter was Sigurd Jahre.
1948 To the whaling ground for the season 1948/49 with KOSMOS
III. The shooter was Hans Mathisen.
1949 After the end of the summer season in Walvis Bay. Leaving
Walvis Bay 27/11, heading for the Southern Ocean via Cape Town with
Flk KOSMOS III in the 1949/50 season. Arrived in the whaling ground
06/12-1949. The shooter was Hans Mathisen.
1950 To the whaling ground for the 1950/51 season with KOSMOS
III. The shooter was John Larsen.
1951 To the whaling ground for the season 1951/52 with KOSMOS
