WASTWATER
ble utstyrt med britisk besetning på 34 mann. De fleste var fra engelske
Royal Navy Reserve og var tidligere besetninger fra fiskeflåten og
handelsflåten.
HMS WASTWATER
deltok i kampene om Narvik.
Etter Narvik ble
Scapa Flow, Orkenøyene
basestasjonen. Fra Scapa Flow
patruljerte de Pentland Firth, Scotland til Cape Wrath, Scotland.
1941
Fortsatte patruljeringen frem til april.
Assisterte 27/08 ved bordingen av tysk ubåt
U-570
(Kapitänleutnant Hans-Joachim Rahmlow)
syd av Island. Ubåten ble tvunget til overflaten etter bombing av
engelske fly etter oppsporing av eskorte tjenesten. Ubåten ble tatt
under slep til Island. Reparert og overtatt av britiske Royal Navy som
HMS GRAPH.

overlevende fra DS DAGNY I (Jacob Kjøde A/S,
Bergen) som ble senket av tyske fly syd for Færøyene. Hun gikk i rute
mellom Adventbukten, Spitsbergen og Storbritannia med kull. Overlevende
fra DAGNY I ble landsatt i Torshavn, Færøyene.
1942 Fra
februar til november var hun engasjert i kystvakt langs kysten av USA
østkyst med base i New York, NY, USA.
Fra november stasjonert i Reykjavik, Island og fra juli en del av 10th
Anti-Submarine Striking Force under kommando av sjefen for
Islandavsnittet med base i Reykjavik. Styrken bestod av seks anti ubåt
fartøy alle var av 1939 utgaven av hvalbåter fra Smith’s Dock. Navnene
var HMS

Beordret til Brasil og i mars over til Sierra Leone og deretter til
Syd-Afrika. I Syd-Afrika får hele besetningen avløsning og blir sendt
hjem til Storbritannia.

Solgt til A/S Odd (A/S Thor Dahl), Sandefjord.
Omdøpt til TIERN.
Satt inn i Fellesdriften for sesongen 1946/47. Fanget for det nye
kokeriet
NORHVAL
(Melsom & Melsom, Larvik) sammen med to andre kompanibåter,
ENERN
og THORIS.
Forlot Larvik 05/10 med kurs for Sydishavet via Las Palmas, Gran
Canaria, Spania 15/10 til 17/10. Ankom Cape Town 04/11. Fortsatte til
hvalfeltet 07/11. Startet fangsten med 8 hvalbåter.

1939
Ordered and built as a whale catcher KOS XXVIII at Smith's Dock
Co Ld, South Bank-on-Tees on behalf of A/S Kosmos (A. Jahre & Co),
Sandefjord. Keel laid 07/07. Sold during the construction period to A/S
Odd (A/S Thor Dahl), Sandefjord. Launched 31/08-1939 as TIERN.
Requested and seized by Royal Navy 07/11. Named HMS GRASSMERE.
Changed name to WASTWATER (FY-239) before handover.
Classified by RN as MS Trawler Lake Class.
WASTWATER was equipped with a British crew of 34 men. Most were
from the English Royal Navy Reserve and were former crews from the
fishing fleet and merchant fleet.
1940 HMS WASTWATER participated in the battle at Narvik.
1941 HMS WASTWATER and others assisted 27/08 on boarding
German submarine U-570 south of Iceland. The submarine was forced
to the surface after the bombing of English planes after the escort
service was tracked down. The submarine was towed to Iceland. Repaired
and taken over by the British Royal Navy as HMS GRAPH.
In August 09/08 HMS WASTWATER rescued 66 survivors from
S/S DAGNY I (Jacob Kjøde A/S, Bergen) who was hit by bombs
from German aircrafts south of Faroe Islands. She was in the coal trade
between Advent Bay at Spitsbergen, and UK with a load of coal and
passengers. Survivors landed at Torshavn of Faroe Islands.
1942 From November WASTWATER was stationed in Reykjavik in
Iceland and from July HMS WASTWATER was part of the 10th
Anti-Submarine Striking Force under the command of the commander of the
Icelandic section based in Reykjavik. The force consisted of six
anti-submarine vessels all of which were from the 1939 edition of whale
boats from Smith's Dock.

HMS WASTWATER
is ordered south bound to Brazil. In March over to Sierra Leone and
further to South-Africa. In South-Africa the whole crew is sent on leave
and sent back home to UK.
1946
Sold to A/S Odd (A/S Thor Dahl), Sandefjord and renamed TIERN.
Used as catcher as a part of
the “Fellesdriften”
(joint operation) the season of 1946/47.
Used as catcher for the new factory NORHVAL (Melsom & Melsom,
Larvik) together with two other company boats, ENERN and
THORIS. Left Larvik 05/10 for the Southern Ocean via Las Palmas
15/10 to 17/10. Arrived Cape Town on 04/11. The whole expedition
continued to the whaling ground 07/11. Whaling season was started with 8
catchers.
1947
The shooter for the 1947/48 season was Otto Olsen, Veierland.

1948/49 season.
