A.G., Hamburg, Tyskland for Walter Rau Neusser Oelwerke A.G., Neuss,
Tyskland. Sjøsatt 03/07 og levert 18/09. Registrert i Bremen, Tyskland.
Bygget med to standard Lenz dampmaskiner (dobbel compound), størrelse
LES 12 på til sammen 6.000 IHK v/95 o. min
som fremdrift av hver sin propell. Damp til fremdrift og prosess levert
fra 6 dampkjeler med trykk på 15 ato.
Deltok i fangsten i sesongen 1937/38 med sine 8 nye hvalbåter RAU I,
RAU II, RAU III, RAU IV, RAU V, RAU VI,
RAU VII og RAU VIII. Alle hvalbåter var nybyggede og
bygget ved Deutsche Schiff und Maschinenbau A. G. Registrert i Bremen.

Liverpool. Reparasjon startet 31/03.
Etter fredsslutningen i 1945 måtte Kosmos-selskapenes fangstmateriell
bygges opp igjen fra grunnen av. De to flytende kokerier KOSMOS

1936
Germany wish to be a part of the “whaling family” and wanted quota to
take part in whaling. No quota, no whaling. After many years of threats
from the German authorities, 3 Norwegian expeditions were handed over,
two for hire and one for sale. The threat from Germany was that they
would build 10 complete expeditions themselves and not allow themselves
to be dictated by international rules if they were not allowed to
participate.
WALTER RAU
was one of these. The same was
UNITAS,
later known as
ABRAHAM LARSEN.
1937
Built as floating whaling factory ship

by Deutsche Werft AG, Hamburg for Walter Rau Neusser Oelwerke A/G, Neuss,
Germany. Launched 03/07 and delivered 18/09. Registered with Bremen as
homeport.
Built with two standard Lenz steam engines size LES 12 at a total of
6,000 IHK v/95 rpm as propulsion of each propeller. Steam for propulsion
and process delivered from 6 steam boilers with a pressure of 15 atm.
Participated in the whaling season 1937/38 with his 8 new whale catchers

All whale catchers were newly built and built by Deutsche Schiff und
Maschinenbau A. G. Registered in Bremen. The expedition departed Hamburg
05/10-1937 with a course for the Southern Ocean manned by 255 men and a
total of 60 crews for whale catchers.
The manager was Lars Andersen, later the manager of Onassis'
OLYMPIC CHALLENGER
when it was new in 1950. He thereby broke the law which has a provision
stating that Norwegian citizens may not directly or indirectly
participate or contribute to promoting whaling with floating cookery
under foreign flags.
1938
After the end of the 1937/38 season, the production result was 109.278
barrels of whale oil.
WALTER RAU
went to the ice for the 1938/39 season with its 8 whale catchers for the
1938/39 season. Mr. Alfred Andersen was the whaling manager for this
season.
1939
The catch ends according to the rules 07/03-1939. The catch result was
103.255 barrels of whale oil. After the end of the 1938/39 season, she

as managers. Registered in London.
1946
WALTER RAU
is further towed to Mersey, Liverpool and put alongside at Brocklebank
dry dock 31/03.
Pursuant to the decision of the TMMC (Tripartite Merchant Marine
Commission) awarded to the US Government. Repair of the ship including
repair of whale processing plant by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Liverpool.
Repair started 31/03.
After the peace treaty in 1945, the Kosmos companies' whaling expedition
had to be rebuilt from scratch. The two floating factory ships
KOSMOS
and
KOSMOS II
had both been lost during the war.
The USA had no interest in whaling and the vessel was hereby offered to
Norway (22/05-1946). The Norwegian government offered the Kosmos
companies to buy it. The Kosmos companies accepted the offer as there
was a need for tonnage and many a whaler became unemployed and it was
two years until new tonnage was ready. The price was NOK 8 million. The
ship was taken over in severely damaged condition. Repaired and rebuilt
at Harland & Wolff Ltd, Mersey, Liverpool.
The job was quite extensive and at the time cost NOK. 12 mill. The
remaining whale catchers had to undergo a thorough repair and upgrade.
The job was finished 06/10 and the factory ready for the 1946/47 season.
The name became
KOSMOS IV
as the name
KOSMOS III
had already been used on a new building from Gøtaverken.
